Have Patience Tue, 14 Jun 2016 04:57:57 +0000 Continue reading "Have Patience"

Training your dog can be difficult if you’re attempting to do it for the first time, or the dog hasn’t experienced any proper training before. However with a kind manner, and a lot of patience, anyone is capable of training their dog. It will take a long time, as you need to do it in small sessions. The usual recommended thought is to have sessions that don’t last longer than fifteen minutes.

You don’t want to have the dog that you’re training getting bored, and distracted during a longer session. You can have sessions two or three times a day though, making the dog training about repetition. Start with something rather basic, such as ‘sit’. When the dog manages that task, and sits for you then move on to other commands like ‘stay’ or ‘lie down’.

Avoid Distractions

Distractions are something that you should avoid as much as possible. Take the dog that you are training somewhere quiet, and try to remove anything that might distract you. It’s not good to have to take business calls, when you’re in the middle of the training session. It’s best to not have the first few sessions at a location where a lot of other dogs and owners go.

Remove Problems during the Sessions

Don’t be nervous if things don’t go exactly to plan. The dog is likely to dislike some of the training, and may display some levels of defiance or aggression, depending on the breed and the dog’s own temperament. If this happens, don’t give up, you need to try to turn the dog’s attention to something good. However irritated or angry you get, try to keep yourself calm and confident. You’re the boss; don’t let the session end up like something from ‘Marley and Me’. It’s best to end the training session when you see the dog becoming tired, or bored.

Positive Reinforcement

It’s a good idea to give rewards whenever the dog achieves a task, as it will mean that the training is a positive thing in the dog’s brain. Treats are the thing that most people think of when it comes to rewards. There are a lot of different types of dog snacks, available in supermarkets these days. Give them a part of a snack whenever they do something that you have commanded.

Games are a good way to keep the dog active, as well as rewarding them for getting something done. You can make a training session into a game, by asking them to ‘sit’ or ‘stay’ before producing a ball for a tug of war, if they follow your command.

Being outdoors can be a reward. This is commonly used when housetraining the dog. Take them to the same spot each time that they need to relieve themselves. If they stay in the same spot for the action, then take them on a short walk. When done enough times, the dog will understand that relieving themselves in the same place means that they get to explore the local area.

Your attention is something that most dogs crave from their owners. It’s one of the best rewards that they can get, to be able to snuggle with you. You can do this, by waiting for your dog to come to you for a pat. Instead of giving the dog what they want immediately, ask them to ‘sit’.

Once the dog has followed the command, then give them some physical affection, like a pat, or a cuddle. If the dog you are training doesn’t do as you ask, then walk away for a little while before trying again. Playing with other dogs is a good reward as just like humans, many dogs love to socialize with each other. So make your dog see that good behavior will mean that you allow plenty of play time with other canines.

Professional Dog Trainers

If you prefer to leave it to someone with a lot of experience, then there are a lot of options. Many professional dog trainers offer private training, which could be best for those dogs that don’t deal well with other dogs, or have issues that mean it’s not suitable to have them around other people currently.

Some dog training businesses offer online courses for you, so that you can become knowledgeable and then follow the steps without paying someone else. If your dog is a sociable type, and you think that it would benefit them, then a group session is also an option.

Training a dog is as important as feeding it. The fact that having a dog is a responsibility cannot be overemphasized. The pet owner must establish a good relationship with his or her dog. And the best way to establish this desired good relationship is to conduct dog training. Training a dog must become a regular activity. In order to get the best out of any dog training, the owner, who is also the trainer, must know the basics of different kinds of training.

Dog training must be a consistent and ongoing effort for both the dog trainer and the dog. Reinforcing desirable attitude must be done on a regular basis for successful dog training. Here are other dog training success methods to ensure a good and rewarding training program.

Kinds of Dog Training Methods

The methods of training dogs are based on the way the dog trainer reinforces the pet’s behavior. The reinforcement can be positive and this is done by giving rewards. The reinforcement can be negative and this is accomplished by giving corrections. Or the reinforcement can be neither positive nor negative and this is carried out by using a neutral sound, such as a click. The dog trainer can use all three kinds of reinforcement in various situations.

The goal of positive reinforcement is to encourage the repetition of a certain behavior. For example, when the dog trainer gives the command “sit,” and the dog actually sits, the trainer can immediately give the reward. There are many forms of rewards. The most common form is the dog training treat. But in the absence of a treat, the trainer can use other forms such as verbal praise, an affectionate rub, and the dog toy.

The goal of negative reinforcement is to make the dog discontinue a specific behavior. For example, when the dog is given the command to sit and the he does not sit or even barks, the dog trainer can correct the behavior by physically holding the dog and making it sit, while verbally repeating the command. The theory is that the dog will associate the command with the position that it is being forced into. Similar to rewards, corrections may also come in different forms. It can be a verbal “No!” that will signal the dog that its owner is not pleased. Or the correction can be very physical such as the use of electric shock collars. For example, if the pet is not allowed to enter a specific room, the collar will send an electric shock if the dog crosses the threshold towards this room. Some dog trainers, however, do not approve of electric shock collars. They believe that the best dog training methods need not involve anything that will give pain.

A click is a neutral sound. But the variations of it can be used to make the dog understand that a certain behavior is desirable and another behavior is not welcome. The major advantage of the use of clicker dog training is that the trainer need not physically hold the dog. This kind of reinforcement is the preferred method of many professional dog trainers..

Once the owner is familiar with the different methods of training dogs, the next step is to decide which kind of training will be carried out first. Some of the popular kinds of dog training types are:

  1. Dog agility training,
  2. Dog potty training,
  3. Dog house training, and
  4. Dog obedience training.

All these training listed above can be carried out one by one or simultaneously

Dog Training should not last too long or the dog will cease to perform at its best. Short training sessions are best and these training sessions must have enough fun games to keep the dog interested and performing at its optimum. Make the training session a sort of bonding time for you and your dog.

These are the dog training success methods that you can apply when training your dog at home. As trainer, do not be discouraged at the first try of training your dog, instead have enough patience and believe that you can actually train your dog and in doing so, ended up with a bunch of savings.

Finding Common Ground While Living With A Diva Pooch Wed, 01 Jun 2016 04:56:53 +0000 Continue reading "Finding Common Ground While Living With A Diva Pooch"

Dogs are truly a man’s or a woman’s best friend. There are a lots of people in the world who will tell you that their pooch is much more reliable than any human that they have ever met, and this includes their spouses. Dogs can add so much to your life, and if you have managed to adopt a diva dog, you will certainly never be bored, but you had better beware.

A diva dog is one that believes that she or he has complete authority over you and your home. He honestly believes that he calls the shots, and if you are not careful, you might find yourself being completely beholden to your dog. Other characteristics that define the diva dog include, but are not limited to:

  • Dictating where he wants to be, when he wants to be there and for how long
  • Positioning himself so that he is the first to walk through the door after a walk or outing
  • Preventing you from having a conversation on the phone without interruption

Make no mistake about it, when it comes to a “Yes this is Burger King, and I most certainly will have it my way” kind of a dog, you can’t be dismissive of their behavior because of size or level of cuteness. As a matter of fact, there are some shih tzus out there who will turn your world upside down if you don’t put their attitudes in check. You have to understand that diva dogs are extremely confident, and their boldness has no boundaries whatsoever. You have a pooch that relishes and even takes pride in the fact that he has the ability to dominate you and any dog that he encounters.

At this point, you may be thinking that you have adopted a furry adaptation of Alexander the Great, but there is some common ground that you and your little king or queen can find. Here are some training tips to help you and your pooch reach some consensus so that you are not left feeling like you are the hired help.

Assert Some Authority And Give Some Direction

A dog with no direction is just going to make it up as he goes along. But in the case of the fur baby that has taken control of the house, often times he has chosen to do so because he does not have the sense that anyone else has assumed the role of pack leader. You need to show your dog that you have authority over your household.

If your pup is engaging in behaviors that you find less than desirable, like jumping on your couch with his favorite stuffed toy just dripping with a fresh coat of doggy saliva for instance, it is simply not enough to tell him no. You should try telling him to get down and then place his toy on the floor. Taking the extra step of placing the toy on the floor along with giving the command of down gives your dog both a verbal and visual indication that placing his juicy toy on the furniture is something that displeases you.

No Mixed Messages

If you have decided on a training method for your dog, everyone in the house needs to be on one accord. You absolutely have to present a united front when dealing with a dog who believes that they rule the roost. Make sure that everyone is using the same verbiage when giving your dog directives. If you have made the decision that your furniture is off limits, everyone in the house must be committed to making sure that they are consistent when dealing with your dog. You should also avoid getting down on your dogs level once you have decided where he can and can’t play. If the floor is his designated play space then you need to resist the urge to get down on the floor with your pooch when he is playing and enjoy your free time on your couch.

You have to remember that the more socialized a dog is, the smarter he becomes, so if you have laid down the law, you are following the plan to a tee, and your spouse allows your dog to sit on the couch with him while you are away, you are going to have some serious issues because you are not only sending your pooch mixed messages, but you are teaching him that he can play one of you against the other. There is no peace to be found in a home with a manipulative dog.

Order Here

You have to provide an overbearing dog some structure. Obedience training is a great way to for you and your dog to learn how to effectively communicate with each other. Commands like stay, sit, and wait can be used as often as necessary while you are preparing meals for example, to control begging. These commands are also good to use when your pooch is getting out of the car, walking out of your home or while attempting to groom your pushy dog. Train your dog to lie down and stay in place when you sit down for dinner. Feed him only after you have completed your meal, this will serve as a subtle reminder to your dog of where he is ranked in the family pack.

You can reclaim your kingdom from your pushy pooch without ruling it like a dictatorship. As history goes, that whole dictatorship thing has never really worked out for anybody anyway. Instead take the lead when going on walks. Provide your dog with the structure that he needs, and before you know it you will find the common ground that will satisfy both you and your pooch.

How do you deal with your diva poochie?

Dog Training and its Benefits Wed, 25 May 2016 04:46:35 +0000 Continue reading "Dog Training and its Benefits"

Our dogs are amazing. They truly can enhance the way we live our lives. They are cheerful, happy and playful. When we are sad, they are sad with us and help cheer us up. However, not everyone can see how amazing our dog is – especially when our dog is barking at them, chasing their cat, or even urinating on something that they shouldn’t be urinating on. There are ways that we can scold our dog, but scolding them never really stops the bad behavior. The only true way that we can stop this is to train them.

Dogs need structure, just in the similar way that small children do. Dogs also enjoy structure. They like the idea of knowing when to do something and when to stop doing something. This is because of their internal desire for pleasing their owners. Dogs can be very gentle. They are very aware of when we are mad, sad or happy with them. When they do something right, we are happy and pet them. We coo at them softly and the dog wags its tail happily. Why not give them the training that they need, which will help improve their life as well as your own?

The more I work with my dog the happier I am. Just the other day when I was walking my I ran into my good friend Cash (shameless plug for him Provo Orem window Washers) and my dog stayed at my side the whole time. Normally I am so ashamed of my dog pulling me this way and that and barking and what have you.

No More Embarrassment We have all been there before. Your friend invites you to their home. They ask about your dog and even offer that you should bring them along so that you can have a “doggie date”. You agree and happily bring Fido with you. However, once you get there, your dog sees the other dog and takes off. He sniffs and sniffs and then barks. You pull him back and smile just trying to shove it off. Then, your dog runs around the house and yard, peeing on almost anything and everything. Your dog doesn’t have to use the bathroom, but they are trying to mark their territory, which is not their territory at all. Now your friend is not only unhappy, but the other dog is also. And this is mostly due to the fact that you have no control over your dog. This is because your dog is untrained. You shout and tell him to stop, but he just continues on. And then, when you are unhappy with him, he doesn’t understand why. Dog training is very important because it teaches dogs to do what they should be doing and to not do what should not be done. It also helps them know what you are happy with, which will help make you both happy together.

If your dog is trained, then they will not:

– Bark aggressively at other dogs

– Urinate where they are not supposed to

– Run from you and continue running when you say to stop

Where To Go

There are many places you can go to get your dog the training that they need.

First off, you can try big box stores. There are some big box pet stores that easily have pet training available. They usually have sessions that last roughly 30 minutes – 1 hour and are a few times throughout the week. Training at places like these typically goes through a 4 – 6 week training cycle. The only downside to this is that after the 6 week cycle, if your dog is still not properly trained, you may need to do it again.

Secondly, there are similar training areas for dogs at veterinarian offices. Most vets also want your pet to be trained properly, so offering training services isn’t unusual.

The third thing you can do to train your dog is to get the help from dog training professional. There are dog training professionals who will come to your home and help train your dog in their own environment. They will also come more often than you may have gone to a store for training. These dog training professionals are aware of many issues dogs can have. With their experience, they will know what to do and what not to do with your dog.

No matter how you seek help for you and your dog, just keep in mind that consistency is key. When you begin training your dog to do something, you need to stick with it. It may take a long time to train a dog; however, it is not long to break them of the training. Once you allow them to do something wrong again, they may go back to their bad habits. It is almost as if you need to be trained similar to your furry friend. Keep up with the proper training and you will be happy!

Any pointers you want to share?

Are you looking to train your newly adapted dog? Or perhaps improve its habits! Well look no further….Dog training is essential as it creates the proper boundary between master and dog and enhances easy communication. Although dog training is advised for private trainers it is possible to train your dog from home. At the end if this piece you shall have learnt how to train your dog and simple commands like sit, some or even toilet train hereby avoiding embarrassing situations [phew!].

8 Guidelines on How To Dog Train:

  1. Allocate at least an hour a day to training your dog

Dog training needs consistency, you have to be willing to dedicate your time and effort at least once a day. Failure to do this the dog will forget the previous days’ lesson taking you to step one [yikes!].

  1. Tell him what to do

Try issuing commands like “sit” or “fetch “instead of using the words no”. This fosters good communication. It could also help if you go down to his level for example when issuing commands like “come here boy!”

  1. Be affectionate

Don’t be afraid to reward him with affection or treats on good performance. Dogs react well to expressions of love and affection. Being affectionate could go a long way to training your dog.

  1. Be patient

Dog training could take a long time. It is relatively easier to train younger dogs as it is to train older ones. In case it takes more than expected lashing out on the dog could actually derail the process. Be patient and all will work out

  1. Be realistic

Keep in mind that all dogs are different and as such have different capabilities. Most dog training techniques are basic to all but you should research on your particular dog breed to avoid putting too much stress on your dog.

  1. Feed your dog properly

Consulting with the veterinarian on the appropriate food or nutrients for your dog could save you expensive treatments later on. Remember a healthy dog is easier to train.

  1. Listen to your dog

Forcing your dog to do something more often than not could lead to a poor relationship. Don’t get me wrong dog training mainly involves standing your ground but you have to be willing to let your dog have its own way once in a while for example when it shows hostility towards a specific person or dog it would best be advisable to force your pet

  1. Freedom

Giving too much freedom to your pet is not advisable. As the training progresses you can increase its freedom more and more. This is particularly applicable in toilet training your dog that entails confining your pup to a restricted area as training progresses you can let the dog loam around the house as you are sure not to find surprises” all over the house.

Now to a few simple dog training techniques:

  1. Teaching your dog how to sit

Among the easiest commands; it helps to keep your dog in control and is particularly useful when taking walks in the park or around the home

  • Using a treat as bait move tour hand up and down allowing your dog’s head to follow the treat.
  • When in a sitting position reward your dog and show affection.
  1. Teaching your dog how to come

Beckons upon your dog could save your dog from harm in case he wanders off. It is advisable to start dog training as soon as you have decided on a name.

  • Tie a leash around its collar
  • Get down to its level and command him or her “come” while tagging the leash. Provide treats when the dog comes to you.

You could then advance to removing the leash and calling him out in a confined area.

  1. Toilet training your dog
  • Provide regular meal times for your pup and offer plenty of toilet breaks.
  • Expose your dog to the outdoors for example taking him or her to a specific place where he is able to identify it with time
  • Regulate his freedom for example allowing access only around a room
  • Know your dog
  1. Teaching your dog how to stay

This could prove difficult especially when training puppies but is necessary as it trains your dog to remain calm at a place. Your dog has to learn how to sit before he can learn this command.

  • Get your dog to sit first.
  • Put your palm facing the dog and take a few stay back when telling your dog to “stay”. Reward your dog with treats and affection. With time you could increase the distance.
  1. Teaching your dog how to leave it

This command could save your pet in case when he finds something dangerous for example a packet of chocolate.

  • Place a treat in both hands
  • Let the dog sniff at one hand and say “leave it’ open up the other hand and give it the treat
  • Continually repeating this will make the dog look away from the first hand and look at you. Reward the dog and offer affection

With all these guidelines in place, you are sure to have yourself a well-trained dog that will not only brighten your life on your whole family but also on the visitors. Good luck please let me know if you have any questions
